BioOrochimaru always wanted more than to be a teacher - he wanted to win a Nobel prize and work in research towards genetics. Unfortunately his ethics weren't quite as good as his ambition, and he was pretty much blacklisted everywhere. It was after that that he fell into teaching - winding up at Oshima (again - he was one of the top students when he was there), to head the Science and Technology departments. He's mastered most aspects of Science, knowing everything from pharmacy to the most basic laws of physics. His knowledge is extensive - stemming from his years of being a workaholic.
Referencing to his actual teaching methods - they're strict and no-nonsense, however, he's one of those who has clear favourites. This makes students opinions about him highly varied. Most of his favourite students tend to get lots of extracurricular help from him too, if you know what I mean. It's clear that he knows about science (so, if I ever need to say anything scientific, I'll apologise in advance for bastardising it horribly *is English geek*), and that he is extremely interested in it - though, you can't help but feel worried when his eyes light up when it comes to Human Biology.
Though he is blacklisted, it hasn't stopped him researching at all - trying to cure Kimimaro's disease in his spare time. How he finds time to mark student's work and plan lessons in between everything he does...well, no-one knows, but it's safe to assume that he's an insomniac (Eh, I'm obsessed with that one...XD).
His attitude to students behaviour is oddly contradictory - no-nonsense in the classroom (unless you're a favourite, then you could probably get away with anything), however outside of his lessons, he could care less - in fact, he often helps the students break rules and laws.
He quite clearly has another agenda within the folds of Oshima, most likely to gain power (*cough*Becomethe demon headmaster*cough*). There's also stories of his problems with rage - well, it's not so much that, he just hates failing.
